CRIME NEWS

  • Gainesville’s Oddities Market took place today, drawing visitors to explore unique items (including taxidermy and handmade jewelry) and enjoy a welcoming atmosphere.  WCJB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gainesville voters will vote YES on a Local Public Utilities referendum on Nov. 4 aimed at restoring local control of GRU after the state took control in 2023 by appointing five board members under Gov. DeSantis (limiting local voter power). Early voting will be available from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, or ballots can be cast on Election Day (to ensure a local voice).  The Independent Florida Alligator

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida football dropped from the USLBM Top 25 after losing 18-16 to USF at The Swamp on September 6. The Gators, now 1-1 under head coach Billy Napier, will play LSU on September 13 and Miami on September 20.  GatorSports
  • The Florida Gators lost to USF 18-16 on Saturday due to 11 penalties, turnovers, and poor clock management—errors that led to their first loss against a Group of Five opponent. Coach Billy Napier said the team must improve both offense and defense to avoid similar mistakes in future games.  WRUF
  • The Buchholz Bobcats beat the Eastside Rams 29 to 19 on Friday at Citizens Field—Chris Johnson rushed for 121 yards and scored a touchdown while the defense forced a pick six late in the second quarter. The team will face Manatee next week at 7:30 p.m.  WRUF
  • Florida's volleyball team beat Ohio State on Sunday afternoon in a 3-0 sweep—ending the Buckeyes' home opener—with scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-14. Jordyn Byrd led with 15 kills while coach Ryan Theis praised sophomore Taylor Parks' play as the team prepares for its next game against North Carolina Tuesday at 7 p.m.  WRUF
  • SEC teams showed strength in Week 2 as Oklahoma earned its first top-25 win over Michigan 24-13 and Mississippi State upset No. 10 Arizona State 24-20, while Florida fell to USF 18-16, shifting expectations for the season.
