  • A new David Bowie-themed pizza restaurant in Gainesville has announced its official grand opening. The owners said the launch is coming soon (details to follow) as they prepare a themed dining experience.  WCJB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A University of Florida alumnus has been appointed to a collegiate board in the Tampa Bay area; the designation was confirmed Dec. 24 and it underscores UF graduates’ strong ties to local higher education.  WCJB

FINANCE NEWS

  • The Mega Millions jackpot reached $125 million for Friday’s drawing after a $1.8 billion Powerball win on Christmas Eve. Florida saw seven $1 million wins in the past month and the next drawing is set for Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 11 p.m.  The Gainesville Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gainesville Mayor Harvey Ward released a Kwanzaa message on Friday, Dec. 26 that urged residents to celebrate with family, community, and culture while outlining seven key principles (unity, self-determination, collective work, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith) rooted in Pan-African traditions.  Alachua Chronicle
  • Florida law permits fireworks only on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day and Fourth of July or for agricultural use, so residents should check local rules and HOAs for specific restrictions — buyers must be 18 or older to purchase fireworks.  The Gainesville Sun
