COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Trinity United Methodist Church held a "Longest Night" service on the winter solstice to offer a quiet space for those handling grief during the holiday season — pastor Marisa Gertz said it provided an opportunity to honor loved ones and find comfort.  WCJB
  • TV20's David Snyder previewed North Central Florida happenings this week: Newberry held its Christmas parade Saturday night, Ocala's Downtown Market hosted a Winter Wonderland Sunday, local animal shelters sought donations, Lake City firefighters extinguished a Walmart fire, and Gainesville celebrated a West African sculpture unveiling (Dec. 20).  WCJB
  • On Sunday, Feed GNV hosted Gainesville's first Winter Solstice Soup Parade, distributing soup + blankets + friendship to hungry families as volunteers walked local streets to support those in need. The nonprofit aims to make the event an annual tradition.  WCJB

SPORTS NEWS

  • After Tulane's loss in the College Football Playoff, Coach Jon Sumrall announced Sunday that five former Tulane staffers, including QB coach Joe Craddock and inside LB coach Greg Gasparato, will join Florida's team for the upcoming season at the Swamp.  WCJB
  • Florida football coach Jon Sumrall will hire Tulane's offensive coordinator Joe Craddock as quarterbacks coach and Tulane defensive coordinator Greg Gasparato as inside linebackers coach (the move follows recent staff changes) in the coming weeks.  GatorSports
  • The Gators beat Colgate 90-60 on Sunday in Gainesville ahead of the holiday break. Head coach Todd Golden praised the game plan as Rueben Chinyelu recorded his sixth double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.  WCJB
  • Florida Gators women’s basketball lost 74-67 at home to Tulsa, with Liv McGill scoring 18 points and Nidi Yiech hitting a crucial three (2:18 left) that boosted the play. They will face Furman on Sunday, Dec. 28 at 2:00 p.m. in Gainesville.  WCJB
  • Florida is expected to hire Tulane's Rusty Whitt as its next strength and conditioning coach, replacing Tyler Miles under head coach Jon Sumrall. Whitt brings over 25-year experience including Army service and will work to build team toughness and reduce injuries.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Florida basketball played Colgate yesterday at 12 p.m. on SEC+ and streamed via the ESPN app and Fubo, as the Gators met Colgate for the first time and aimed to extend their winning streak after a strong performance against St. Francis.  GatorSports
