COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly 400 families received fresh produce and essential items at a farm share on November 6 at Hal Brady Recreation Complex—volunteers, community leaders and local school groups helped with the distribution, and organizers plan to hold more events to support families facing food insecurity.  Alachua County Today
  • Gainesville’s nearly 170-year-old Matheson House needs urgent renovations to preserve its historic structure, as all work must meet approval from the Historic Preservation Board & Florida building codes. The Matheson History Museum has raised about $124,000, including a $40,000 city grant, and seeks donations to cover a projected total cost of up to $400,000.  WUFT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Florida will break ground on the new Hamilton School in its historic Infirmary building on Fletcher Dr where the building will house lecture halls, seminar rooms, collaborative classrooms, seminar lounges, a winter garden and modern amenities. Judge Charles Canady will join UF as director and tenured professor after leaving the Florida Supreme Court and his move means Governor Ron DeSantis will name his replacement in 2026 while the groundbreaking starts at 11 a.m. Monday.  WCJB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alachua County approved $200,000 emergency funding to distribute fresh fruits and vegetables to SNAP recipients facing food insecurity—benefits were disrupted by recent issues. The county partnered with six resource centers and two farmers’ markets to offer food on a first-come, first-served basis—residents had to show SNAP enrollment and county residency.  Alachua Chronicle
  • The City of Gainesville finished upgrades at Morningside Nature Center’s Living History Farm, adding new livestock pens, lean-to structures, a grazing area, and utility improvements. The center will host its annual Cane Boil and Fiddle Fest on Nov. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — visitors can enjoy live music, demonstrations and family activities.  Alachua Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • P.K. Yonge senior Ethan Bertrand—recognized as the Meldon Law Scholar Athlete for ranking in the top 140 nationally and scoring 5 goals this season—is also a 3.9 GPA student active in National Honor Society, Blueprint and peer tutoring. He plans to play college soccer and study mechanical engineering.  WCJB
  • Former Gator Will Richard of the Warriors received his NCAA Championship Ring from Head Coach Todd Golden before the game against the Magic in Orlando on Tuesday—he scored six points in 15 minutes during the 113-121 loss and said he looks forward to winning another ring.  WCJB
  • The Gators women's cross country team earned a spot at the NCAA Championships after winning the South Regional last Friday and will compete on Saturday, Nov 22 — Kelvin Cheruiyot earned an automatic bid by winning the men's 10K race, making him the first Florida man to qualify since 2015.  WRUF
  • After a 69-54 loss to Navy last Sunday, Florida women's basketball will face Florida State today at 6:30 p.m. at the O’Connell Center while Liv McGill remains day-to-day on a lower-body injury—FSU’s Sole Williams is also listed as day-to-day.  WRUF
  • Florida Gators baseball signed a recruiting class ranked No.6 by Perfect Game and No.5 by Baseball America for the upcoming season. The class features top outfielder Brady Harris — the best-rated in his class — and several highly-rated pitchers and position players from across the country.  GatorSports
