Good morning, Gainesville. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 31st of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Alachua has celebrated 20 years of Scarecrow Row as volunteers and local businesses display handmade figures in a Snow White theme along Main Street and the Town Centre. The event serves as a lead into Trick-or-Treat on Main Street today (starts at 6 p.m.), expected to draw families for a festive celebration.  Alachua County Today
  • Gainesville’s Mom Walk Collective—formed in 2024 by Ashley Griffin and her sister—holds twice-monthly walks where mothers share their struggles and build supportive bonds. The group, which celebrated its first anniversary on October 12, is planning a no-kids moms’ night out to further encourage local connections.  WUFT
  • The City of Alachua and Elder Options hosted the second annual Senior Expo last week at Legacy Park Multipurpose Center where older residents visited information booths, screenings, and resource referrals and enjoyed a free meal provided by the Mebane Alumni Association. City officials said the expo strengthened community ties — and upcoming recurring programs such as bingo, Zumba, and Coffee & Games will continue to support older adults.  Alachua County Today

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bravo Supermarkets debuted in Newberry to serve the local Hispanic community with Latin American foods as residents no longer have to travel far for familiar products. The store opened with bilingual staff and will complete renovations by mid-November—its celebration is scheduled for January.  WUFT
  • Southeastern Grocers will rebrand as The Winn-Dixie Company in early 2026 as it acquires Hitchcock’s Markets in Alachua, Keystone Heights and Williston to boost its Florida roots. The new store at 434 E. Noble Ave. in Williston will open in early December and workers from the old location will continue serving customers — while the Alachua and Keystone Heights stores convert by summer.  Alachua County Today

  • The GHS volleyball team advanced to the Class 5A Final Four after sweeping Legacy 3-0 on Wednesday night—ending a 14-year drought and marking libero Addy Hauptman’s achievement of 1,000 career digs under new head coach Jerica Carter-Mitchell in her second year.  WCJB
  • Three college athletic directors from Penn State, LSU — and Florida used the same words when they fired their football coaches this season. Twelve coaches were let go at a combined cost of $124 million in contract buyouts, showing how quickly jobs can change in college football.  WRUF
