COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Butler Enterprises will host the Fifth Annual International Car Show on October 25 from 9 a.m. to noon at Butler Town Center in Gainesville — the free event will feature a collection of vehicles from multiple decades and benefit the Rotary Club of Gainesville Foundation.  Alachua Chronicle
  • The National Coalition of 100 Black Women Inc. is launching a new chapter in Greater Gainesville to serve Alachua, Columbia and Marion counties—83 founding members will be inducted on November 1. Local leaders like chartering president-elect Florida Bridgewater-Alford and organizer Gwendolyn Carroll are preparing the chapter to offer advocacy, leadership and mentorship programs—efforts aimed at empowering women and girls in the region.  The Gainesville Sun

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ballyhoo Grill, a Gainesville restaurant that opened in 1999, closed permanently at 3700 W. University Ave. in Royal Park Plaza—after an eviction judgment on Oct. 17 was granted following unpaid rent dating from Aug. 1 and a missed court order for payment by Oct. 15—and its owners’ motion to set aside the judgment was denied.  The Gainesville Sun
  • On October 14, at the Cade Prize for Inventivity event held at the Cade Museum, Quornix—a biotechnology startup from Bloomington—won the Grand Prize for creating new treatments for bacterial diseases and received $60,000 along with free legal, marketing, and product development support. Other finalists included teams from Alachua and Gainesville, and local students chose Mud Rat for the Student Choice Award as the event celebrated its 16th year of recognizing early-stage inventors.  Alachua Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction began yesterday on the new NE 31st Avenue Multi-Use Trail as city departments started work on a 10-foot paved path connecting NE 15th Street and NE Waldo Road—temporary shoulder closures will occur during driveway apron reconstruction. R. E. Arnold Construction, Inc. received a $1,499,900 contract and the project will continue into summer.  Alachua Chronicle

  • Billy Napier was fired on Sunday because his team had too many losses, and fans feel sad about the tough season. Florida now searches for a new coach, with names like Lane Kiffin and Kerwin Bell mentioned as possible choices—though no clear winner has yet been picked.  WRUF
  • Florida fired coach Billy Napier on Sunday afternoon after a 22-23 record during his fourth season—his departure raises concerns over losing key recruits such as Justin Williams and CJ Bronaugh as the school prepares to hire its fifth coach in 11 years.  WRUF
  • The No. 3 Florida men’s basketball team will face the No. 13 Arizona team on Nov. 3 in Las Vegas as part of the Hall of Fame series. The Gators, with a young roster fresh off a championship run, will take on one of three top-15 non-conference matchups — a key test before the NCAA tournament.  WRUF
  • Florida interim head coach Billy Gonzales held his first press conference on Monday—after being named on Sunday—and said he will push the Gators to improve amid the coaching change following Billy Napier’s departure.
