CULTURE NEWS

  • Rocky Horror Picture Show returns to Gainesville at The Wooly where shadowcast shows began on Oct. 1 and will run through Nov. 4. Co-director Xanna Prentice—an original cast member since 2013—leads the production that brings seasoned fans and newcomers together for an interactive theatrical experience.  The Independent Florida Alligator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Florida leaders unveiled the fourth-generation HiPerGator supercomputer yesterday to help prepare students and educators for an AI-driven future. The system is part of a broader initiative that includes a partnership with NVIDIA (a UF alumnus co-founder helped secure key technology) to integrate AI in classrooms and local schools.  WCJB
  • UF Student Government announced Emmy-winning actress Britt Lower will be the university’s next Accent speaker. She will address students on November 13th at University Auditorium.  The Independent Florida Alligator

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Alachua County Environmental Protection Department invites residents to join a guided walk at Phifer Flatwoods Preserve – Lochloosa Creek Tract on October 29 from 9 to 11 a.m. The event meets at 15015 CR 2082 in Hawthorne and is free to attend, but it is limited to 20 participants who must register by email or phone.  Alachua Chronicle

FINANCE NEWS

  • Florida Lottery officials announced that Joseph Demaio — a 50-year-old from Lake City — won a $500,000 prize in the Cash Blowout scratch off game. He claimed the prize at lottery headquarters in Tallahassee after buying the winning ticket from Tower Road Supermarket on University Avenue in Gainesville.  WCJB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new bill filed on Oct. 13 would require public school teachers to take an oath to the nation and state, promising to uphold the Constitution and maintain a respectful learning environment. The Florida Education Association has questioned the measure since similar requirements already exist in law, while Rep. Tom Fabricio said the oath is intended to restore respect for American values.  The Gainesville Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • Christian Maugee, a 26-year-old PhD candidate from the University of Florida, is teaming up with Bill Nye to raise awareness for research on Friedreich’s Ataxia (a rare genetic neuromuscular disease). He appears in three of four episodes of Bill Nye’s new campaign aimed at supporting patients and advancing study of the condition.  WCJB

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Florida men’s basketball team is predicted by a media poll to win the SEC this season and three Gators named Alex Condon, Thomas Haugh and Boogie Fland earned spots on the preseason All-SEC teams. The team beat expectations last season by finishing second and winning tournaments and will open play on Nov. 3 in Las Vegas against Arizona.  WRUF
  • Gators Volleyball will face No. 17 Tennessee in Knoxville today in an SEC match—after recent wins over Missouri and Vanderbilt, the team aims to overcome its struggles with consistency, especially in the second set. Coach Ryan Theis and the squad are focused on carrying their momentum into a challenging game against the Vols.  WRUF
  • Florida football has struggled in the fourth quarter this season, not scoring a touchdown since Sept. 6 and falling behind as opponents controlled possession and made key plays. The Gators will host Mississippi State for homecoming on Oct. 18 at The Swamp — coach Billy Napier said the team will review its decisions to improve late-game performance.  GatorSports
  • After a loss to Texas A&M, Florida Gators will host Mississippi State on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. for Homecoming—marking the first game without a ranked opponent since Week 2—with Florida favored by 9.5 points and Mississippi State aiming to improve their SEC start following a 31-9 loss.  WRUF
  • Wyatt Langford left football in high school to focus on baseball and earned a Division I offer from UF when he was 16. Now with the Texas Rangers, he reached a milestone by joining the 20 to 20 club and his strong work ethic suggests he may become a future star—continuing his rise from his time as a Florida Gator.  WRUF
