  • Leadership Gainesville Class 51 will host the Brunch & Brass: A Perryman Revival fundraiser on Nov. 8 at Cotton Club Museum—this event aims to raise $20,000 for permits, an architectural rendering and the restoration of the World War II-era Perryman's Grocery in southeast Gainesville.  The Gainesville Sun

  • Eric Godet, President and CEO of the Greater Gainesville Chamber of Commerce, announced his resignation effective December 31—he led the Chamber for seven years and his departure marks a turning point for local business.  Alachua Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Evergreen Cemetery in Gainesville spans nearly 60 acres and is cared for by a dedicated keeper who has spent years digitally recording thousands of graves to preserve the city’s past—she will continue updating her records as more history unfolds. Her work helps ensure that future generations can learn about those who shaped our community.  WUFT
  • Acclaimed South Florida chef Clay Conley is launching Stoke, a new monthly farm to table dinner series in a renovated barn in southwest Gainesville — the dinners, starting October 25 and running through May, require reservations and serve multi-course meals using local ingredients. All proceeds will benefit Buccan Provisions to help fight food insecurity.  The Gainesville Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida's top education official, Anastasios Kamoutsas, scolded the Alachua County school board Tuesday night—accusing it of fostering a culture of intimidation after board member Tina Certain's controversial social media post. He ordered her to appear at the November meeting to defend her role as he vows to change the board's approach towards conservative views.  WUFT
  • UF has chosen Larry Forthun as the permanent chair of the Family, Youth and Community Sciences department—effective Oct. 24. He served as interim chair for 21 months and will support faculty and students in innovative teaching and research.  Alachua Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Children’s Trust of Alachua County said they need more details on how city leaders use funds for the violence interruption program that received $150,000 for gun violence reduction, and they want clear proof of positive results. City Manager Cynthia Curry and officials will meet with trust board members on Monday—continuing a discussion on program accountability.  WCJB
  • Renovation of City Hall Plaza will begin Tuesday, Oct. 14—public access to City Hall, the Old Library Building, and Lot 5 parking will remain unaffected. The project, approved in 2023, will remove 1960s ponds to create space for up to 2,400 people and updated gardens, seating, landscaping and lighting, with work on the MLK Jr. Memorial Garden finishing before the January federal holiday.  City of Gainesville

SPORTS NEWS

  • After Florida’s win over No. 9 Texas, quarterback DJ Lagway earned two weekly awards as he was named to the Davey O’Brien Award Great Eight list and received an honorable mention from the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award—he threw 21 passes on 28 attempts for 298 yards and two touchdowns during the game.  WCJB
  • Chimere Dike, a former Gator and rookie for the Titans, was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after he led the NFL with a 34-yard kickoff return average and recorded a 65-yard return in Week 5. The Titans will play Las Vegas on Sunday.  WCJB
  • After Week 6, Florida college football teams showed big changes as Miami remains strong at No. 2 from wins over Florida and USF—Florida Gators rallied with a win over No. 9 Texas while FSU lost ground after an early upset and USF Bulls gained momentum with key victories. With few upcoming ranked games, each team must win decisively to boost its playoff chances.  WRUF
  • Head coach Billy Napier led the football team to a 29-21 win over No. 9 Texas at Ben Hill Griffin while coach Samantha Bohon guided the soccer team to a 2-1 win in Austin. Both teams earned their first SEC win and will face tough opponents soon—Napier’s team meets Texas A&M and Bohon’s squad has more challenging games ahead.  WRUF
  • Former Florida Gator and NFL player Earnest Graham is now coaching Santa Fe High and has boosted the team’s record to 4-2 this season. The Raiders will play at Keystone Heights at 7:30 p.m. Friday—marking the program’s best start since 2014.  WRUF
  • An anonymous donor purchased the 2025 Final Four court for Florida basketball and gave it to Florida Victorious for an auction with Goldin to raise money for student athletes. The auction will sell pieces of the historic court+ let fans own a part of a key win, with more details coming soon.  GatorSports
