CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Gainesville High School Concert Choir will join the Festival Singers of Florida for a free concert called 'Another Glorious Day' at First Presbyterian Church (300 SW 2nd Ave) on October 11 at 7 p.m. The event will feature a new piece by composer Kara Stacy Bedwell and more than 100 singers will perform. - ➤ Gainesville residents will have various Halloween events to choose from including an indie concert at Heartwood and a ball at First Magnitude Brewing Co. on Oct. 31 from 7 to 11 p.m. The Rocky Horror Picture Show runs at The Wooly from Oct. 1 to Nov. 4 and Regal theaters will show horror films with bar crawls on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1—each event offering live music, costumes and spooky films to celebrate the holiday. - ➤ On October 4, Dream on Purpose hosted a Car Care 101 workshop at City Auto Repair for girls aged 11 to 18 that taught them essential car maintenance skills like checking fluids, tire pressure and changing a spare tire. The event, part of the nonprofit’s Cupcakes and Conversations series (attendance grew from 11 last year to nearly 40 participants), marked the second year of its partnership with City Auto Repair as Dream on Purpose celebrated 10 years of empowering young women. - ➤ Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo in Gainesville received a $300,000 grant from the Rotary Clubs of Gainesville Foundation to fund an Elevated Treehouse System and Learning Center—designed to improve visitor access and learning. - ➤ Karen Melvin, a 1st grade teacher at Norton Elementary School, was awarded $500 after 33 years of teaching—she will use the funds for new science experiments to boost her students’ learning. WCJB

- ➤ County commissioners and MV Transit met at the Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization to ask the city to reconsider its decision on paratransit services—MV Transit proposed to continue providing the service for $2.7 million. WCJB

- ➤ Florida's soccer team earned its first SEC win on Sunday with a 2 to 1 victory over Texas Longhorns in Austin — a win that improved its record to 5 to 5 to 3 overall and 1 to 2 to 3 in SEC play. Freshman Kai Tsakiris opened the scoring with a penalty kick and centerback Abby Gemma added another — helping secure six SEC points and a spot in the November SEC Tournament. WRUF
- ➤ Florida's sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway kept his promise by throwing two touchdown passes and recording a season-high 298 yards in a 29—21 win over then-No. 9 Texas. - ➤ Florida Gators starting libero Lily Hayes, an 18-year-old Tampa native, became the first freshman to start since 2006 by recording 177 digs and five service aces in 13 matches—she earned a silver medal with the U.S. Girls U19 National Team and aims to play pro one day.
