- ➤ Santa Fe College has 52 fully funded scholarships for military veterans — including one named in TV20's honor — with endowments coming from donors across North Central Florida. WCJB
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Hurricane Humberto strengthened into a hurricane on Sept. 26 and is forecast to rapidly intensify into a Category-4 storm while Invest 94L is expected to become a tropical depression over the weekend near the Bahamas. Forecasters say the Fujiwhara effect may cause the systems to interact and create uncertain impacts for Florida and the southeast U.S. coast. The Gainesville Sun
- ➤ Hurricane Humberto strengthened into a hurricane on Sept. 26 and is forecast to reach Category 4 strength over the weekend—Florida residents may face dangerous surf and rip currents. - ➤ Gainesville will host a free live performance of the solo play On Sight by Dr. Micah Johnson at University Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Oct.10 to mark World Mental Health Day. The city also will hold town hall meetings on Oct.1 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hall of Heroes and virtually on Oct.4 at 10 a.m. and Oct.7 at 6 p.m.—to develop the Community Gun Violence Prevention Alliance's first strategic plan. - ➤ Keil McGriff, the Buchholz wide receiver and son of football legend Travis McGriff, was ruled out for his senior season after an ankle injury and will not play his final season in Gainesville. Coach Mark Whittemore confirmed that an MRI led to surgery plans and he expects a full recovery in a few months—his team will support younger players until he returns. The Gainesville Sun
- ➤ Week 6 of Florida high school football began Thursday when Oak Hall beat P.K. Yonge 45-0, and Friday's games include a key district contest at Citizens Field as Nease faces Buchholz. - ➤ Freshman Kai Tsakiris has become a starter for the Gators as a forward and midfielder after trading the West Coast for Florida—she scored her first SEC goal against Arkansas, played at Georgia on Friday, and will prepare for the home game against Kentucky on Oct. 2. WRUF
- ➤ Florida’s soccer team will face No. 17 Georgia at 6:30 p.m. today in Athens as they try to break their conference winless streak.
