COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Alachua County will host NASA’s international Observe the Moon Night on Oct. 4 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at Cuscowilla Nature and Retreat Center in Micanopy, where UF students will provide telescopes and a UF geologist will give a talk while parking is available for $5 per vehicle.  Alachua Chronicle
  • On Sept. 27, the Alachua County Library District will host Fandomonium at Headquarters Library from 10 a.m.—4 p.m. while a section of Northwest 25th Avenue is renamed IBEW Avenue to honor local electricians — from Sept. 30—Oct. 31, the UF/IFAS Extension will run the Peanut Butter Challenge to aid food pantries and the UF Edugator AI tool is honored with a Florida TaxWatch award for saving money.  The Gainesville Sun

CULTURE NEWS

  • UF students are enjoying classic films at local theaters during the Month of Masterpieces, a program that shows movies up to 80 years old. Regal Butler Town Center and Regal Royal Park schedule a new film each day in September—showing titles like Citizen Kane and The Thing—to offer a fresh viewing experience.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Today, USA TODAY Network Florida holds its final poll for voters to choose the most famous Floridian from five candidates. Jimmy Buffett leads the field—joined by Tom Petty, Burt Reynolds, Thomas Edison, and Ray Charles—and the poll will close Sunday, Sept. 28 at 11:59 p.m. ET with results announced Oct. 2.  The Gainesville Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a Sept. 23 meeting, Santa Fe College Board of Trustees approved a new associate degree for skilled trades—focused on industry leadership set to launch in Spring—and greenlit a $5 million proposal to renovate its gym to fix roof damage. The Board also announced that student financial aid will be dispersed soon and honored retiring SFPD Chief Ed Book, whose successor will start Oct. 1.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Students at the University of Florida can now try a perfect drink pairing for every library as a new guide links cozy study spots with special drinks—chai latte for the Architecture and Fine Arts Library, green tea for the Education Library, water for the Health Science Center, espresso for the Lawton Chiles center, iced latte for Smathers, matcha for Lib West, and Celsius for Marston Science Library.  The Independent Florida Alligator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alachua County is converting two old motels on Southwest 13th Street into 67 permanent homes for unhoused residents—Budget Inn’s renovations, delayed by repairs, will finish in December while Scottish Inns is expected to complete by the end of the month, including a container home pilot funded by grants. Outreach and case management will follow to help residents access the new housing.  WUFT
  • Congresswoman Kat Cammack joined Newberry officials—Mayor Tim Marden, City Manager Jordan Marlowe, and City Commissioner Mark Clark—to replace stolen American and service branch flags at the Veterans Memorial in Lois Forte Park after they were taken in early August.  Alachua County Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida football locked in Georgia, Kentucky and South Carolina as its three permanent annual opponents through 2029 as part of the new nine-game SEC conference schedule starting next year. The SEC announced its full schedule for 2026 through 2029 on Sept 23 at 7 p.m. on SEC Network and ESPN 2—this schedule sets up future venue changes for key rivalry games.  WRUF
  • Steve Spurrier, a Florida coach who started the Florida-Tennessee rivalry in the 1990s, now supports Tennessee as long as they do not play teams he coached—he said the new SEC schedule will not let Florida and Tennessee meet in 2026 or 2028—making room for different matchups.  GatorSports
