- ➤ The Alachua County Library District invites community members to Fandomonium— a free fan convention scheduled for Saturday September 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Headquarters Library in Downtown Gainesville. The event will offer a fan art show, cosplay contest, comic drawing workshops, and video gaming—featuring a workshop with Marvel Comics illustrator Jerry DeCarie. Alachua Chronicle
- ➤ Chabad UF prepared for the Jewish high holidays by loading 1,500 challah rolls, kosher meat from Miami, and supplies into the rabbi's minivan, and they expect record turnout with over 1,500 students. The center spent between $100,000-$120,000 on planning events, hosted a Gators Stay Sweet service on Monday, and will hold further holiday services today and through Oct. 2. - ➤ On September 18, the City Commission removed equity language from a HUD document, named Russell Etling to the canvassing board for the November 4 special election, and approved a $1.83 million contract to refresh City Hall Plaza. The plan will remove the ponds, add seating and a Sister Cities Garden, and construction may start mid-October with major work complete by Martin Luther King Jr. Day and early April—changes meant to secure needed HUD funding. - ➤ Gainesville Police Department works with 3-D Mobile Mammography to offer women on-site breast cancer screenings, which take 10 to 15 minutes with a photo ID and insurance card. The mobile lab will next stop at Palms Medical Group in High Springs on September 30. WCJB

- ➤ At a Gator reunion last Friday, former basketball star Vernon Maxwell was honored when 1404 points were added back to his record, making him the program’s all-time leading scorer—he said he felt grateful for the recognition. - ➤ Florida’s Gators volleyball setters Taylor Parks and Alexis Stucky have boosted the team with strong play and teamwork.
