CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, thousands attend Comic Con at World Equestrian Center as fans in cosplay celebrate their favorite franchises—spanning comics, movies and TV shows.  WCJB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After the biomass buyout on November 7, 2017, the city commission did not cut the $38.3 million general fund transfer from GRU, which led to a bond rating downgrade and increased financial risks. GRU CEO Ed Bielarski said the commission’s inaction was reckless — it left the utility and its customers vulnerable.  Alachua Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • SEC teams earned strong wins in Week 4 of college football, with Oklahoma reaching 4-0 after a touchdown that officials said was in error while Missouri and Vanderbilt also recorded key wins. Florida lost 26-7 to Miami and now has three losses—raising concerns for coach Billy Napier as rankings will update later.  GatorSports
  • Buchholz High School won against Richmond Hill after lightning caused an hour-plus delay and the score stood 21–0 per FHSAA rules when the game was suspended at halftime — District 6A-3 play will resume on Friday at 7 p.m. when Buchholz hosts Ponte Vedra Nease.  WRUF
  • Gators Softball standout Taylor Shumaker, representing the St. Louis Cardinals in Home Run Derby X, competed this weekend in a 3 vs. 3 contest that combined power hitting and defense—teams earned points from both home runs and catches to compete for a $200,000 prize.  WRUF

  • Florida Gators soccer held No. 15 South Carolina Gamecocks to a scoreless draw today — goalie Paloma Peña made six key saves for her first shutout using a new back five formation. The team will travel to Athens on Friday at 6:30 p.m. to face the Georgia Bulldogs.  WRUF
  • Florida lost to Miami 26-7 as its offense produced only 141 yards and quarterback DJ Lagway took accountability for the poor performance—he promised to change things. Coach Billy Napier said he would review the plays as the team struggled at 1-3.  GatorSports
  • The Gators lost to No. 7 Wisconsin on Sunday in Madison as they dropped three straight sets after winning the first set 25-19—marking Wisconsin's first win over the team in that city. The team will look to bounce back with conference play beginning Friday against Mississippi State.  WRUF
  • After another crushing loss at Hard Rock Stadium last night, the Gators looked uncertain about their direction—an inconsistent offense and defense left them with a 1-3 record in coach Billy Napier’s fourth season.
