ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Tuesday morning, an electrical malfunction set off fire alarms at Marston Science Library and the computer sciences and engineering building, leading to an evacuation and quick check by emergency crews—officials confirmed there was no hazard once the alarms were reset. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Demolition started on Sept 16 at the old Thelma A. Boltin Center at 516 NE Second Ave after city leaders voted on Sept 4 due to high repair costs and county officials said they were not informed beforehand. The city will rebuild the site as a trailhead for the Sweetwater Trail Loop and outdoor space to honor Boltin’s legacy. The Gainesville Sun
- ➤ The Alachua County Foster Grandparent Program received renewed funding yesterday— and now seeks volunteers aged 55 and older who meet income requirements to support public schools, charter schools, childcare centers and after-school programs with tutoring, mentoring and encouragement for children facing challenges. - ➤ At a special meeting on September 11, the Commission set the property tax rate at 7.6000 mills, adopted the FY26 budget and finalized fees for fire, stormwater and solid waste—public hearing on these matters is set for September 23 at 5:01 p.m. Officials said the rate increases come from higher property values and inflation as they work to cut taxes over time. - ➤ Dr. Scott Teitelbaum, director of UF Health Florida Recovery Center, celebrated 29 years of sobriety on Aug. 22 after losing his family and license to addiction, and he now leads an expanded Gainesville campus built to help people overcome substance abuse—reflecting his own journey from rock bottom. - ➤ Florida's football team faces criticism—after a 10 to 20 loss against LSU when quarterback DJ Lagway threw five interceptions and the offensive line committed costly holding penalties. - ➤ Gator Motorsports is building a new race car by designing a custom inverter and housing unit and updating its business presentation for the 2026 competition.
