- ➤ On Sept. 11th, nearly 150 people gathered at UF’s Plaza of the Americas to hold a prayer vigil honoring Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot at Utah Valley University during his American Comeback Tour. Students led the peaceful event with songs and prayers while police maintained safety throughout the plaza—ensuring the community could mourn and remember his legacy. WUFT

- ➤ Trimark Properties has restored the historic Seagle Building in downtown Gainesville by updating its façade, replacing over 500 windows, and converting two floors into modern office suites while keeping the 1920s style. Work is underway on a new restaurant space at ground level—designed to offer a modern dining experience. Alachua Chronicle
- ➤ Midnight Cookies, located at 3345 SW 34th St. Suite 1, will close on Sept. 21 after 15 years of business due to declining sales — the owners plan to offer discounted cookies on closing day and later share their popular recipes online. The Independent Florida Alligator

- ➤ Dr. Steve Noll will present his talk Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and Steamboats too at the Matheson History Museum in Gainesville on September 17 at 7 p.m., where he will cover Florida’s transportation history and current issues—this event is part of Florida Talks and is sponsored by Florida Humanities. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The UF/IFAS nutrition education program, FNP, will end on Sept. 30 after federal funding cuts stop free nutrition classes and produce programs in low-income communities—Gainesville’s Partnership for Strong Families is now seeking a pro-bono partner to replace its services. The program, which reached 270,000 students last year, will also result in job losses for 76 staff and a disruption of nutrition education resources. The Independent Florida Alligator
- ➤ Santa Fe College will host a free regional college fair on Sept. 17 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the SF Blount Center at 530 W. University Ave. More than 50 colleges and trade schools from in-state and out-of-state will offer information on admissions, financial aid and academic programs — free parking is available — for attendees. - ➤ The Gainesville Police Department and the University of Florida Police Department have set up online safety resources and reporting systems on computers, laptops and mobile devices-as the fall semester begins. They work together by patrolling neighborhoods, using safety apps and cameras to help keep students and the community secure. City of Gainesville
- ➤ Rep. Randy Fine proposed a bill to study whether Florida springs and nearby lands like Ocala National Forest should become a national park to protect the springs and boost tourism. Local residents, economists and conservationists have given mixed feedback—some worry that more visitors may damage the environment while others support the study. WUFT
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Earnest Graham, a local football icon, led Santa Fe to a 24 to 20 win over Palatka Friday night, moving the Raiders to 3 to 0—the best start since 2014. Graham credited the team’s intense practice sessions for transforming the program and said they are preparing for tougher road games next week. The Gainesville Sun
- ➤ Florida football has cancelled future series with California, N.C. State and Arizona State—contracts allowed an exit if the SEC schedule expands. The Gators will still play 10 power conference games each year and keep the Florida-Florida State rivalry. GatorSports
