CRIME NEWS

  • Kenyata Markeisha Tucker, 33, was sentenced to one year in jail and four years of probation after pleading nolo contendere to reckless driving that led to a fatal crash on August 29th when her minivan left the road, hit trees, and killed a back seat passenger, and she must complete a driver improvement course and pay $7,500 restitution.  Alachua Chronicle
  • Shaun Phillip Bond, 59, was arrested last night at Publix on Main Street in Gainesville after he allegedly cracked a glass door while trying to re-enter the store, and he faces attempted burglary charges with bail set at $25,000—he reportedly acted erratically—and a mental health evaluation has been ordered within 24 hours.  Alachua Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Gainesville Latino Film Festival announced its second edition of the Children’s Festival and Latino Art Exhibition to celebrate Latin American art on Sept. 13 — the Children’s Festival will have bilingual storytelling at Matheson History Museum at 11:00 a.m. and a film screening at Blount Hall Auditorium from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., while the art exhibition at Blount Hall Gallery opens at 5:30 p.m. with guest speaker Dr. Mable Baker.  Alachua Chronicle
  • Brazil Fest Gainesville 2025 will turn Heartwood Soundstage into a hub of Brazilian music, dance and family fun on Saturday, September 13. The festival begins at 3:00 p.m. — featuring free outdoor performances, a kids’ movie screening at 3:15 p.m. and VIP indoor access for $20 — and will engage visitors with a variety of cultural activities.  Alachua Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gainesville High assistant principal Dr. Mallory Becker received the 2025 Yale Educator Award on September 9—she was nominated by former student Yoo-Min Koh and recognized by Yale University for her role in helping students excel. Becker said the honor confirms that every positive interaction with students matters.  Alachua Chronicle
  • University of Florida students developed the Gathr app to help college students connect with campus organizations—this free app lets users sign up with their UF email, add interests, and see current events. The startup plans to expand to other colleges in the near future.  WCJB

  • Alachua County was chosen as one of 16 communities nationwide to join the Housing Supply Accelerator Challenge that will help expand safe and affordable housing. Local officials will participate in virtual sessions+receive technical help and peer learning opportunities+to boost housing supply and address local needs.  Alachua Chronicle

  • Florida quarterback DJ Lagway showed early-season rust in the game on September 6—he missed several throws because he did not have enough practice due to injuries. He said he feels great and will work on his timing with receivers in the next games.  WRUF
