ECONOMY NEWS

  • UF/IFAS is helping Florida farmers switch from citrus to clumping bamboo—an alternative crop with year-round harvest and lower import costs—while researchers study planting practices to guide growers.  Mainstreet Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Homeland Security now requires international student visa applicants to list all their social media accounts—this rule is meant to review accounts for national security. UF students and legal experts say the new rule may slow visa processing and chill free speech.  The Independent Florida Alligator

SPORTS NEWS

  • At UF football games, ticket holders used a new facial authentication system to skip long lines after the program launched on Aug. 30 — fans took a selfie during Ticketmaster purchase and used six dedicated Express Entry kiosks for quick entry. Gainesville officials said the system worked well and assured that no photos are stored on the entry devices.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Florida's soccer team holds a 4-2 record and will try to extend its win streak today—hosting Georgia State in its final non-conference match. Forward Addy Hess won SEC Freshman of the Week and leads the team with goals and assists as it prepares to start SEC play.  WRUF
  • Florida football played Saturday without key players as defensive tackle Caleb Banks, offensive lineman Fletcher Westphal, defensive back Micheal Caraway Jr. and true freshman wide receiver Dallas Wilson—who was sidelined—did not participate in pregame warmups against South Florida. Meanwhile, redshirt sophomore Aidan Mizell returned and junior linebacker Grayson Howard along with sophomore edge rusher LJ McCray took part after recovering from injuries.  GatorSports
  • Florida Gator J.Michael Sturdivant, a 6-foot-2 transfer from UCLA who first played at Cal, joined the team in January and showed promise in his debut at The Swamp last week by catching passes and scoring a touchdown — he credited former local quarterback Graham Mertz and said he is excited for an upcoming game against USF on Saturday.  WRUF
