COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UF Students Demand Action and Alachua County’s Moms Demand Action marched through Plaza of the Americas on campus Friday—calling for an end to gun violence. The protest pushed for stronger gun safety laws and local efforts in Tallahassee.  Mainstreet Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The School Board of Alachua County will hold a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. on September 9 at the District Office Boardroom (620 E. University Ave) to adopt the Final Budget for 2025 to 2026 and the Millage while holding a public hearing for community input.  Alachua Chronicle
  • On Sept.4, the Gainesville City Commission voted six to one to demolish the Thelma A. Boltin Center in the Duckpond neighborhood and will redevelop the site as a trailhead along the Sweetwater Trail Loop to honor Boltin's legacy.  The Gainesville Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • UF scientists at the University of Florida have developed a universal cancer vaccine that prompts the immune system to attack tumors (tests in mice showed tumor shrinkage). They will soon start human trials to see if the vaccine can help patients while they wait for personalized treatments.  The Independent Florida Alligator

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Florida Gators beat the FGCU Eagles 2-1 at Dizney Stadium on Thursday—using strong counter-attacks to take an early lead—and will host Georgia State at 6 p.m. Sunday as they build on a bounce-back win at Maryland.  WRUF
  • Today the Florida Gators will face USF at 4:15 p.m. on SEC Network. Coach Billy Napier said his team will focus on stopping senior quarterback Byrum Brown and making quick, explosive plays—all while relying on the home crowd to boost their effort.  WRUF
  • UF’s Gator Esports Center opened at the Reitz Union on Aug. 28, giving students a new space to play video games, form teams, and join competitions. The center has 36 PCs — including a soundproof arena and console stations — and was designed after years of planning by club founders and current leaders.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Friday night, Eastside High faces Buchholz High at Citizens Field in a rivalry football game that will test the Rams after their 28-25 win last week as they try to keep their undefeated season alive while Buchholz aims for a 12th straight series win—clear skies will give both teams a fair field.  WRUF
