EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida Virtual School started the new 'AI in Math' program to help Algebra 1 students learn AI skills through fun math activities. A June pilot showed students had higher confidence in math, and enrollment is open from Sept. 1—Sept. 30 with a certificate from the University of Florida for those who finish.  Alachua Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gainesville city commissioners will decide today whether to renovate or demolish the Thelma A. Boltin Center in the Duckpond Neighborhood. The first-phase $3 million stabilization does not make the building usable — full renovation may cost over $6.6 million or a new facility could cost up to $7.7 million.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Gainesville earned LEED Gold certification from the USGBC on June 30 after scoring 70 of 110 points on its first LEED for Cities application. At today’s City Commission meeting, a USGBC representative will present a plaque—marking a key step in the city's sustainability plans.  City of Gainesville

HEALTH NEWS

  • To mark Suicide Prevention Month, local groups are offering counseling and community events to help people with mental health challenges — the Alachua County Health Promotion and Wellness Coalition works with schools to make referrals. Sage Wellness and NAMI Gainesville will launch new programs and share supportive resources — they aim to reduce stigma in the community.  The Independent Florida Alligator

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida coach Billy Napier said the Gators will play a strong USF team on Saturday after the Bulls won by 27 points over Boise State last week. Key players like quarterback Byrum Brown and receiver Eugene Wilson III are getting ready for the game at The Swamp — both teams will work hard to start the season well.  WRUF
  • The No. 12 Florida Gators beat the USF Bulls in a four-set match in Tampa on Tuesday night, moving to 3-1 as key service aces from Ella Vogel and Milica Vidacic helped secure the win — the team wrapped up its third straight win after last year’s home opener loss.   • Florida men's golf team will begin its 2025-26 season on Saturday and Sunday at the Sahalee Players Championship in Seattle—coming off a strong spring season that featured an SEC Championship, NCAA regional title and national semifinals appearance. The team is ranked No. 4/5 in the preseason polls and three players have earned All-America honors, with junior Luke Poulter added to the Walker Cup watch list.  WRUF
  • No. 12 Florida Volleyball narrowly escaped an upset scare at USF yesterday, September 3—after losing five sets at their home opener last season. The team showed strong performance on their early-season road test away from home.  WRUF
