- ➤ Several local innovators in Alachua County are finalists for the 16th Annual Cade Prize—the competition will take place on Oct. 14 at the Cade Museum in Gainesville and features projects in Healthcare and Technology. - ➤ Gainesville Police are searching for Dalton Sherwood, 93, who suffers from severe cognitive decline and was last seen this evening near Southwest 44th Place in the Tower Road area driving a silver 1999 Volvo station wagon — he was wearing a blue shirt, blue jeans, and brown slip-on shoes. WCJB
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UF closed its Office of Sustainability after nearly 20 years of service—citing a 5% budget cut that eliminated 75 positions—and its functions were absorbed into UF Facilities Services. - ➤ The City of Gainesville reported an update on the Thelma A. Boltin Center project—evaluation shows the current $3 million budget will only cover phase one repairs needed to stabilize the building. Officials will present six options at the City Commission meeting on Sept. 4 to plan for phase two improvements that will reopen the center for public use. Alachua Chronicle
- ➤ Alachua County is renovating two motels on Southwest 13th Street to provide housing for individuals facing homelessness as renovations at the Scottish Inn are set to finish on September 30 and those at the Budget Inn are expected to complete on December 30 — wood rot and termite damage delayed the latter. The $8 million project will transform the buildings into 67 affordable housing units with rent capped at 30% of tenants' income. WCJB

- ➤ Freshman receiver Vernell Brown III stunned Gainesville today at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium with a one-handed catch that set a record for a freshman as he gained 79 yards.
