CRIME NEWS

  • Ethan Van Young Jr., 33, was arrested yesterday for breaking a car window at Shoppes at Thornebrooke and stealing a wallet before using the victim’s credit cards to buy video game controllers at Walmart and Dollar General—he faces burglary, grand theft, and fraud charges with bail set at $110,000.  Alachua Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • GRU Authority filed a complaint against the city on Aug. 27 to stop a special election on Nov. 4 that would let only Gainesville residents vote on GRU control—leaving over 35% of its ratepayers without a vote—and said the ballot language is misleading and violates state and federal laws.  The Gainesville Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Florida has joined the Sunshine Genetics Consortium to research rare childhood diseases—uniting several local universities, hospitals and biotech partners with $3 million in seed funding to shorten diagnosis delays and improve treatment options for children.  WCJB

  • On Aug. 29, the Eastside football team rallied from a 19-point deficit to win 28-25 over Rickards in a hard-fought game.  WCJB
