CRIME NEWS

  • Clifford Byron Trunick IV, 41, was arrested on August 26 for child neglect after his two-month-old baby was hospitalized for an overdose on cocaine and fentanyl—authorities report the infant is now stable.  Alachua Chronicle
  • Devon Junior McCarthy, 29, who was in a pre-trial diversion program, was arrested on August 25 at Crunch Fitness in Gainesville after he allegedly pulled a knife on two men in the locker room and threatened them — he faces two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was released on bail set at $15,000.  Alachua Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UF dropped one spot among public universities to No. 5 and slipped four spots overall to No. 30 on Forbes’ 2026 America’s Top Colleges list based on factors such as alumni success, earnings, and student debt. UF also ranked twice in the top 25 for best return on investment—a sign of strong value at its online and on-campus programs.  The Gainesville Sun
  • UF revised its financial aid waiver policy for STEM students effective this Fall, so the waiver now covers only half of the remaining tuition cost after other aid is applied & may impact out-of-state students who expected full refunds. The change comes after state legislation altered the program and the waiver was removed from some student accounts before classes began.  The Independent Florida Alligator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Gainesville City Commission met on August 21 and heard a crime update that showed fewer homicides, robberies, and assaults—though stolen firearms increased—while keeping their earlier budget plans. They also directed staff to work on a new lease for Lot 10 and form a group to plan a Cultural Arts Center in East Gainesville.  Alachua Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jake Maher, a 5-year-old Gainesville preschooler, is in remission from a rare cancer he was diagnosed with after collapsing at preschool a year ago, and his family says his condition has improved.  WCJB

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Florida Gators reloaded their backcourt by adding transfer guards Xaivian Lee and Boogie Fland after losing key players, including starting guard Denzel Aberdeen who left for Kentucky. Coach Todd Golden said the new transfers and deep bench will help the team as they prepare to face Arizona in Las Vegas on Nov. 3.  WRUF
  • Florida Gators coach Billy Napier confirmed that sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway will start Saturday’s season opener against LIU as he recovered from shoulder and calf injuries during the offseason — his strong practice performance has boosted his leadership for a tough schedule ahead.  WRUF
