CRIME NEWS

  • Thirty-five years after five University of Florida students were murdered, some Gainesville residents still remember the tragedy—even though the campus stays calm today.  WCJB
  • Jedrick Jose Hernandez-Rodriguez, 23, was arrested on August 24 after a Gainesville police officer detained him during a bar check and he allegedly tossed a loaded gun toward patrons—he is on probation and now faces charges including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.  Alachua Chronicle
  • Elijah McKenna Eyerly, 29, and Paulina Sophia Oswald, 27, were arrested on drug charges after a traffic stop at 9:46 p.m. on August 23 when officers broke a window to force entry—Oswald was removed by a K9 team and Eyerly was forcibly taken after he kicked the dog.  Alachua Chronicle
  • An 18-year-old was arrested last night in Gainesville for allegedly swinging a sword that injured a man and endangered two children—he now faces charges of aggravated battery and child abuse.  Alachua Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Aug. 22, the Hippodrome Theatre reopened its historic manual lift elevator—after a year and a half of repairs.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Gainesville’s Harn Museum of Art is hosting French Moderns—an exhibit featuring 56 works including those by Monet and Matisse—that opened on August 5 and will remain free to visit until January 4. The display spans a century of French art history and shows how artists changed styles during tough times.  The Independent Florida Alligator

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Florida Gators soccer team defeated the North Florida Ospreys 5-0 at Donald R. Dizney Stadium after a 15-minute weather delay — three players scored their first collegiate goals. The team will face the Central Florida Knights at 7 p.m. Thursday.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • UF head coach Billy Napier said the program has built a strong foundation for the season by landing the No. 7 recruiting class in the nation with 31 true freshmen who impressed during camp—each set to contribute as the team prepares for its Aug. 30 opener. Standouts include freshman quarterback Tramell Jones Jr., wide receivers Dallas Wilson and Gainesville native Vernell Brown III, and edge rusher Jayden Woods.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Florida soccer won 4–2 against Towson and will face UNF on Sunday at Donald R. Dizney Stadium—Freshman Katie Johnston recorded two goals and two assists while Coach Bohon noted the added depth that will help in the busy week ahead.  WRUF
  • Florida beat Pittsburgh 3-2 in a five-set match at Pinnacle Bank Arena as head coach Ryan Theis earned his first win—freshman Kira Hutson helped score after Pitt led early in set one. The Gators will play an exhibition game against PVK Olymp Praha tomorrow at 7 p.m.—the match will offer more play time for the team.  The Independent Florida Alligator
