CRIME NEWS

  • Gainesville Police Department arrested three Ocala men for murder in connection with the Easter shooting at TB McPherson Center that claimed the life of 20-year-old Ontaria Baisden— the suspects are being held at Marion County Jail.  Alachua Chronicle
  • Gainesville man Keith Gerard Miles, 42, pleaded nolo contendere to two dogfighting charges—recorded during an illegal fight on March 18 in the 400 block of SE 12th Terrace—and was sentenced to 18 months in state prison on August 19.  Alachua Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UF reported record research spending of $1.33 billion for its 2024-25 fiscal year—marking its highest level ever and placing it among top public university spenders according to the National Science Foundation survey. The university invested in a strong internal support system and secured external funding to boost faculty competitiveness amid wider funding uncertainty.  The Independent Florida Alligator

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida Gators fans follow fierce rivalries with teams like Georgia, FSU, Miami, and Tennessee that spark energy and strong traditions each season. The team will face LSU on Sept. 13 at Death Valley — a game that carries a century of history and promises big moments on the field.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Tuesday night, several area volleyball teams played their season openers—Oak Hall won 3-0 over Countryside Christian and Buchholz defeated Branford 3-1. Newberry, Meadowbrook, Cedar Key, Dixie County, Santa Fe, Orangewood Christian, South Sumter and Forest also secured wins that set an exciting tone for the season.  WCJB
  • Florida volleyball has a new head coach as Ryan Theis replaces longtime coach Mary Wise ahead of the upcoming 2025-26 season. Theis—who coached at UF earlier and led teams at Ohio and Marquette—will guide a young Gators team ranked 16th as they prepare for their season opener on Aug. 22 at 9 p.m. against Stanford.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Ben Hill Griffin Stadium hosted a spirited game where students, alumni and local fans sang the Gainesville favorite 'I Won't Back Down'—a tradition started in 2017 to honor Tom Petty that boosted Gator pride after a 24-17 win against Ole Miss.
