CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Gainesville’s TheColdCases.com Podcast — launched by veteran Dustin Terry — broke into the top 10% of active podcasts by ranking 43,911 out of over 500,000 on August 18. The show covers unsolved crime cases and will expand with new investigative episodes in the future. Alachua Chronicle
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At its August 18 meeting, the UF Board of Trustees did not vote on an interim president candidate and Chair Mori Hosseini said the board is still searching for a replacement for interim leader Kent Fuchs—whose contract ends Sept. 1—and will schedule an in-person meeting to interview candidates once one is found. The university will start its search for a permanent president in early 2026. The Gainesville Sun

- ➤ Hurricane Erin is a Category 4 storm that will strengthen today and cause dangerous surf and rip currents along Florida’s Atlantic coast — it is expected to stay east of Florida while warnings are issued for parts of the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos, and residents are advised to check their hurricane supplies. - ➤ Alachua County School Board revised its public comment rules on August 13 after criticism of board chair Sarah Rockwell’s Facebook comment about the late Hulk Hogan. Florida Education Commissioner Anastasios—Stasi—Kamoutsas said she violated state law and board members’ salaries might be withheld when she appears before the State Board of Education on August 20. - ➤ At a meeting on August 14, the Gainesville City Commission voted to raise property taxes by 0.3 mills—raising costs by about $5 to $10 monthly for homeowners—and freeze eight positions along with 26 others to address an $8.7 million budget gap. The appointment of an interim City Manager will be discussed on August 28 following Cynthia Curry’s resignation effective in November. Alachua Chronicle

- ➤ Gainesville offers college students many ways to exercise, including the indoor Southwest Recreation Center at UF that is free with tuition and gyms like Gainesville Health & Fitness and Yoga Pod that provide flexible schedules and affordable options. - ➤ Florida football said it will wear throwback jerseys on Oct. 18 for its homecoming game against Mississippi State, marking the first time in four years they have used old uniforms.
