BUSINESS NEWS

  • Victoria's Secret will open a 6,970 sq ft store in Butler Town Center later this fall; the shop at 3630 SW 32nd Court will offer lingerie, sleepwear and beauty products — Butler Enterprises announced the plan on August 16.  Alachua Chronicle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Last week in Florida, initial jobless claims dropped from 6,252 to 6,230 as reported by the U.S. Department of Labor—national claims also fell from 227,000 to 224,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Florida gas prices increased last week as the average for regular fuel reached $2.98 per gallon on Monday—up from $2.95 the previous week. The state’s prices remain 4.5% lower than the national average even though a year ago they were 8% higher.  The Gainesville Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • University of Florida has agreed to provide extra funding for major changes on Gainesville's RTS bus routes. The route changes will take effect on Monday to improve service for local riders.  WCJB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida is rebuilding its linebacker room after losing key players last season — the team now relies on experienced juniors like Grayson 'Pup' Howard and Jaden Robinson along with promising sophomores and freshmen who will compete for playing time. Coach Billy Napier said the mix of veterans and newcomers gives the team depth to build future success if they stay healthy.  WRUF
  • Florida Gators sports updates showed the soccer team lost its season opener in Tallahassee on August 15 against Florida State after a strong start, while defensive tackle Caleb Banks missed fall camp with a lower leg injury. The baseball and gymnastics teams also made moves through transfers and draft selections earlier in the week—Gators are set to build depth for the rest of the season.  WRUF
  • CBS Sports and ESPN released bowl game predictions that list the Gators with different bowl matchups, with one site showing a Dec. 27 game against North Carolina and the other showing a Jan. 2 contest against Kansas or Duke. Florida will begin the season on Aug. 30 against LIU at 7 p.m.—head coach Billy Napier said his team must work hard to earn a playoff spot.  WRUF
  • Local columnist Pat Dooley said that Florida football must boost turnover margins, start faster, score better in the red zone, and win third downs to have a special 2025 season—his advice comes ahead of the Grading The Gators feature on Aug. 30 on WRUF 98.1.  WRUF
