ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A firefighter was injured responding to a house fire on Southwest Eighth Drive—his glove was cut by a piece of metal and he was taken to a hospital while firefighters quickly extinguished the fire that began in the garage just after 10 a.m.  WCJB
  • A Gainesville Fire Rescue firefighter was injured while fighting a residential fire on SW 8th Drive on August 15, and he was taken to the hospital in stable condition — a fire investigator was called to examine the cause.  Alachua Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The School Board of Alachua County will hold a meeting at 6 p.m. on August 19 at the District Office Boardroom, 620 E. University Ave in Gainesville for general business matters. The agenda includes public comment periods and consent items—critical for board decisions.  Alachua Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tropical Storm Erin strengthened with winds of 70 mph and became a hurricane Friday, Aug.15—forecasters say it will intensify to a Category 4 storm with 130 mph winds in the coming days and may bring dangerous surf to the coast.  The Gainesville Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After a disruptive meeting on July 31, the Alachua County School Board set new rules that will take effect at the meeting on Aug. 19 and require anyone wishing to speak to fill out a Speaker Request Form up to 24 hours before the meeting while limiting comments to two minutes each. The change follows state concerns and is meant to keep public discussion orderly.  WCJB
  • University of Florida and Gainesville officials agreed to provide $215,143 for Routes 5 and 8 so buses run more frequently during peak hours in the fall and spring semesters; the city will add $166,316 for these routes and fully fund Routes 15 and 43 with $356,525—officials say the move supports key transit service improvements.  The Gainesville Sun

  • A UF senior offers a guide for new students that lists top Gainesville restaurants such as The Paper Bag, Tikka Express, Germain’s Chicken Sandwich, The Spot, and Tup Tim Thai—each offering different tastes for a range of dining needs.
