COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officials from the Central Florida Community Action Agency held a hurricane preparedness event in Williston—attendees received free hurricane supply bags with flashlights and first-aid essentials. Caroline W. Ruff-Looney said the event was designed to boost readiness in Alachua, Levy and Marion counties while local partners helped raise funds for low-income families.  WCJB
  • On Saturday, more than 100 pets were adopted at the Alachua County Animal Resource Shelter adoptathon. Officials say they hope for more animals to find homes this month—adding to local efforts.  WCJB

CRIME NEWS

  • GPD officers arrested Jennifer Leigh Secreto, 42, and Jasson Edward Joseph Secreto, 41, after a trespassing enforcement on August 8 near NE 31st Avenue when their pit bull mix attacked an officer, who shot the dog in self-defense (the officer was treated for his injuries).  Alachua Chronicle
  • Parris Tremel Lee, 31, who was on pre-trial release, was arrested August 9 for allegedly possessing marijuana on the Duval Early Learning Academy campus — surveillance video showed him smoking and approaching school staff — and he now faces charges for controlled substance possession near a school.  Alachua Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A judge denied the GRU Authority Board’s motion to stop voters from deciding who controls the utility & the board leader said their fight is not over.  WCJB
  • Alachua County Public Works reminded drivers on August 9 to follow school bus safety rules as school starts next week, saying motorists must stop for buses with flashing red lights and extended stop arms on two-lane streets and highways without a raised barrier. The guidelines warn drivers that failing to stop can lead to fines up to $465 and license suspensions—only drivers on the opposite side of a raised barrier may not need to stop.  Alachua Chronicle
