- ➤ A Gainesville man, Khalil Barnett, 29, was arrested on charges of battery, marijuana possession, carrying a gun as a convicted felon, resisting and tampering with evidence after he ran from deputies investigating a domestic violence call in Tower Oaks—he is now held in jail with no bond set. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Color Compass is a grassroots effort started by Ana Duran and her children after they saw that many art programs lack the supplies needed when budgets are cut. The project collects used crayons and pencils from local churches and sends them to schools in Colombia and Kenya, while the Tools for Schools program supplies local teachers and runs a mobile unit — both efforts help reduce waste and make learning more affordable. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cynthia Curry resigned as Gainesville City Manager after four years—her final day is November 21—and said she leaves the city in a better spot because she helped save money, keep streets safer, and boost local projects. The city must now find a new manager as it faces an inquiry by the Florida DOGE task force into spending and tax policies. WCJB
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ UF/IFAS experts explained that common plants like citronella and lavender only repel mosquitoes when their oils are extracted (passive planting is mostly ineffective) and stressed that removing standing water and using layered control methods is essential.
