COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ North Central Florida agencies are hosting National Night Out events to build community ties — the events include a child passenger safety station to enhance vehicle safety awareness among families. WCJB
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UF will hold three summer commencement ceremonies at the Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center, where more than 3,000 students will graduate this week. The first ceremony on Friday at 2 p.m. will honor 447 doctoral graduates, the second on Friday at 7 p.m. will serve graduates from several colleges, and the Saturday ceremony at 10 a.m. will celebrate graduates in agriculture, education, liberal arts, and business (including bachelor's, master's, and specialist degrees). - ➤ UF and its graduate union declared an impasse on July 31 after months of wage talks ended without a counter-proposal. The deadlock halts changes to graduate assistant stipends and released time—delaying agreed benefits until a full contract is reached. The Independent Florida Alligator
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ UF researchers found that only about 20,000 great white sharks remain worldwide and their study shows the sharks split into distinct groups, yet scientists are unsure why differences in their genetic material do not match usual breeding patterns. - ➤ Gainesville Regional Airport will open a new 418-space parking garage on Aug. 27 to ease parking shortages and support ride-sharing and bus services — the project cost $11.57 million and is part of a planned $107 million in improvements following record 2024 traffic of 578,175 passengers. - ➤ Two Alachua County residents hired an attorney after they received a short redacted clip of the 2024 Christmas party video and pressed the city to supply an unredacted copy or detailed legal reasons for the redactions—after which the city released a longer version in July without fully addressing the concerns.
