ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A fire was reported early Sunday morning at an apartment building at 1220 Northwest 12th Street in Gainesville — firefighters discovered a hidden fire in the attic and smoke damage on the second floor that was quickly extinguished, with no injuries reported. WCJB
- ➤ A mobile home in Citra caught fire Saturday evening — Marion County Fire Rescue reported that there were no injuries. WCJB
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Tayana Nalany Lebron-Alvira, 18, was arrested at about 1:03 a.m. on August 3 at a downtown Gainesville bar near University Avenue and Main Street for disorderly conduct and battery on a law enforcement officer amid a fight, and she is charged with resisting an officer without violence—bail was set at $17,000. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Frazer School's Bach Ngo, a rising 12th grader, won the 41st Denker Tournament of High School State Champions on August 3rd, earning a $5,000 college scholarship and $650 cash — his win qualifies him for the U.S. Junior Championship and the World Youth event. Alachua Chronicle
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ GRU CEO Ed Bielarski said the City’s plan to hold a special election on Nov. 4 to dissolve GRUA is misleading and removes limits on the government services contribution—he warned that vague ballot language and the timing of a court hearing set for Aug. 7 may harm GRUA’s due process rights. This plan, he argued, risks higher utility costs and debt problems in the future. Alachua Chronicle
