- ➤ Alachua County Animal Resources is hosting the Summer Lovin’ Adopt-A-Thon on Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at its Gainesville shelter on NE 53rd Ave where adoption fees will be waived and each pet will receive up to $600 in care and supplies—helping families bring a new pet home. - ➤ 97.3 The Sky concluded its 9th SKY Valor Honors Program in Gainesville, honoring local police and first responders by airing heroism stories in June and holding an award ceremony on July 31 at the Best Western Gateway Grand Hotel—Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier spoke at the event. - ➤ Operation Catnip in Gainesville sterilized 100,000 cats by holding a large clinic on July 12 and officially reaching the milestone on July 23 — volunteers, UF College of Veterinary Medicine alumni, and caregivers from over 12 Florida counties joined the event. - ➤ Gainesville man Eric Rohan Palmer, 38, was arrested yesterday after he allegedly held a pistol to a woman's head at Reflections Apartments and took her phone to stop her from calling 911—authorities later recovered a gun matching the description from him. Alachua Chronicle
- ➤ Gainesville deputies shot and killed 44-year-old Samuel Edgardo Rivera Tuesday morning at 102 NW 9th Terrace after he fired multiple shots at officers serving an arrest warrant for controlled substance charges near the University of Florida. Mainstreet Daily News
- ➤ Gainesville man James Mobley (43) was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison with five years supervised release for multiple drug and gun felonies after a July 11 traffic stop uncovered a loaded revolver and narcotics and law enforcement held him accountable. Mainstreet Daily News
- ➤ Gainesville authorities arrested 27-year-old Brendan Dinkins on Thursday after they found he sent explicit images and messages to a 15-year-old from September 2024 to April 2025 and he is held on a $500,000 bond facing 20 counts. WCJB

- ➤ Alachua County is partnering with food system consultants New Venture Advisors to study a food hub that may strengthen the local food economy and support farmers — residents, growers, and community organizations are invited to share ideas through a 10-minute online survey. Alachua Chronicle
- ➤ The Alachua County Commission will hold two special meetings on Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Grace Knight Conference Room on the second floor of the County Administration Building (12 SE 1st St., Gainesville) to review FY26 budget items and discuss an advisory board topic. - ➤ County courthouse construction will begin on Monday, Aug. 4 in downtown Gainesville as fencing is installed for a new civil courthouse and parking garage. Parking at the courthouse will be unavailable during construction, but nearby public parking is available free in Lots 2, 3 and 4 24/7 with downtown parking free before 10 a.m. and after 8 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends and city-observed holidays.
