CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities evacuated apartments and blocked University Avenue from 8th Avenue to 10th Avenue after a barricaded gunman fired shots from a unit at an apartment near UF while serving an arrest warrant—no injuries were reported.  WCJB
  • A suspect fired a shot at deputies Tuesday morning near UF while officers attempted to serve him a felony narcotics warrant, and he barricaded himself in an apartment near NW 9th Street and University Avenue—residents were evacuated and West University Avenue between 8th and 10th Street was closed—and no one was injured.  Mainstreet Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Harn Museum of Art will open its French Moderns exhibition on August 5 to celebrate its 35th anniversary—featuring more than 55 works from the Brooklyn Museum and running until Jan. 4. Admission is free for all visitors.  Alachua Chronicle

  • Gainesville’s Dr. Angeli Akey was awarded the Florida Medical Association Certificate of Appreciation on July 29 for her three-decade career in primary care at North Florida Integrative Medicine (serving over 3,500 patients).   • UF Health Shands Hospital is ranked among the nation’s best as the U.S. News and World Report Best Hospitals report for 2025-26 names seven specialties (cancer, geriatrics, ear, nose and throat, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology and neurosurgery, urology, and pulmonology/lung surgery) with high ratings.
