COMMUNITY NEWS

  • People Against Violence Enterprises hosted the 26th annual Stop the Violence Back to School Rally today at the Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center in Gainesville where speakers such as WWE commentator Byron Saxton, Gator great Earnest Graham and Sheriff Chad Scott urged youth to chase their dreams and work together to end gun violence. Rev. Karl Anderson said the event moved from Santa Fe College for renovations — a change he called divine intervention that brought the right crowd with emotional testimonies, lively shows and backpack gifts.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Alachua Habitat for Humanity announced an anonymous donation of over $160,000, the largest single gift in its history, that nearly pays for a new home. The donation will fund the future home of the Kearse family—part of the 19th Women Build initiative to expand affordable housing.  Alachua Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • Gainesville police arrested Christian Sanchez Perez, 40, after a domestic dispute in which his partner said he forced her into unwanted sex, hit her, and dragged her across the room—he now faces charges of sexual battery, simple battery, domestic battery by strangulation, and interfering with law enforcement.  WCJB

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Harn Museum of Art at UF in Gainesville will open the exhibit French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950 on Aug. 5, showing over 55 paintings, drawings and sculptures from the Brooklyn Museum plus a work by Monet that marks 35 years of art-centered experiences. The exhibit will run until Jan. 4 and is free to visit.  The Gainesville Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Alligator is recruiting UF and Santa Fe College students for Fall 2025 positions in reporting, editing, photography, videography and more, with staff meetings held in-person at the newsroom. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Clayton Emerson, 17, was killed in June 2024 when his motorcycle was struck on East University Avenue by driver Keith Grant who failed to yield. His family drafted Clayton’s Law to require toxicology tests for fatal crashes involving negligence after his death, and his mother Kelli Boyd started a petition on June 30 that has gathered nearly 4,500 signatures—Grant received a citation in July and is set to appear at a hearing on Sept. 4.  The Independent Florida Alligator

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida is preparing for its season opener next month against LIU as Coach Billy Napier boosts the team with first-team SEC picks and key players like quarterback DJ Lagway—analysts say winning more games than last season would move the Gators into playoff discussion. Athletic Director Scott Stricklin supports Napier, and both expect a tougher SEC schedule to challenge the improved roster.  WCJB
  • Last Monday, the Maxwell Football Club announced that sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway was named to the Maxwell Award watch list for the upcoming season. He had a strong freshman season with 1,915 passing yards and an MVP honor at the Gasparilla Bowl — semifinalists will be named Nov. 11 and the final winner Dec. 11.  WRUF
