- ➤ Michael P. Mauer, a Gainesville resident and VFW life member, earned national recognition by winning the Silver Award for Best Feature Article in the 2024 VFW National Publications Contest for his article honoring the VFW Post 2811 Auxiliary President’s service to veterans—marking his sixth national award over the past decade. - ➤ The Pentecostals of Gainesville moved to a larger facility on Parker Road with an inaugural service held at 6 p.m. on July 27. The move followed a final service at 8105 NW 23rd Avenue and a celebratory car parade marking the church’s transition. Alachua Chronicle
- ➤ Alachua County’s volunteer ham radio operators participated in a 24-hour communications challenge at the Emergency Operations Center at 1100 SE 27th Street during Field Day on June 28—29, testing emergency communications readiness last month. The North Florida Amateur Radio Club led the event with live satellite contacts and free FCC training for Loften Magnet High School students and community members, and commissioners recognized local radio volunteers at their June 10 meeting — acknowledging their role in disaster response. - ➤ Reginald Lawson Gill, 56, was arrested yesterday on a shoplifting warrant after a chase through the woods near the Depot Avenue bike trail—he faces charges for resisting an officer without violence and additional theft offenses. Alachua Chronicle

- ➤ At a meeting on June 9th, the Newberry City Commission approved a change on 59.43 acres for a residential project that will let developers build up to 500 homes over 20 years and updated fireworks rules to limit sales around state holidays. The Commission also named Randa Paul as city clerk after Judy Rice’s retirement and set aside funds for park safety repairs — while starting a Summer Meals Program at Easton — to enhance local government services.
