COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A street near St. Patrick Catholic Church was renamed Father Julien Way to honor Father Roland Julien (who served for 35 years) after he died late last year. Officials, church members and law enforcement gathered at the corner of Northeast 16th Avenue and Second Street on Tuesday morning, and he would have turned 87 Tuesday.  WCJB
  • Gainesville will host the Art, Heart, and Healing event on Saturday, July 26th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.—an art fundraiser that supports victims of natural disasters.  WCJB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UF Ph.D. student William Santana (a Brazilian studying sport management) won an international research award for his paper that details an anonymous reporting tool he created to help athletes report harassment. He developed the tool after 13 athletes reported abuse while he managed cheerleaders (drawing on his personal experience) and he hopes to build a safer system for reporting in the future.  The Independent Florida Alligator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Governor Ron DeSantis held a press conference in Gainesville to announce that Florida’s DOGE team will visit City Hall to audit local spending and check programs in order to help lower property taxes — he said that new CFO Blaise Ingoglia will lead the review to show exactly how taxpayer money is used. More jurisdictions will be reviewed soon as the state works to give residents better tax relief.  Alachua Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • UF sophomore Jessica Guiser and redshirt sophomore Addison Klonowski, now veterans on the women’s golf team, will guide incoming freshmen as they start the season. Coach Emily Glaser said the team focuses on clear communication and improving their game process as they prepare for upcoming tournaments.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Florida freshman receiver Dallas Wilson set a spring game record with 10 catches and 195 receiving yards—his work ethic was praised by coach Billy Napier and quarterback D.J. Lagway—and he will join the Gators for the season opener on Aug. 30.  GatorSports
  • The 2025 MLB Draft ended on July 14 with six Florida Gators and two signees selected, including shortstop Colby Shelton, pitchers Jake Clemente and Pierce Coppola, third baseman Bobby Boser, and catchers Luke Heyman and Brody Donay. Teams must finalize deals with the players by July 28 at 5 p.m.—this continues UF's tradition that has seen 116 draft picks under coach Kevin O’Sullivan.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Florida football coach Billy Napier said the Gators will have about 120 players at fall camp next week as the new settlement allows walk-ons to be grandfathered in—this decision avoids forcing cuts to meet the current roster limits.  GatorSports
