CRIME NEWS

  • Gainesville Police Department is investigating the shooting of a 19-year-old man on July 20 at about 10:44 p.m. on NE 15th Street—officers treated him before he was taken to a hospital.  Alachua Chronicle
  • On Sunday night, deputies responded to reports of shots fired at Westgate Manor Mobile Home Park at 5816 SW Archer Road and found no victims—hospital records later reported one person with a gunshot wound related to the incident.  WCJB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Florida's Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education hired 20 new faculty members on July 21, raising its total to 53 professors — and enrollment is expected to increase from 1,340 to 1,500 by fall.  Alachua Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On July 21, a heat dome from the Ohio and Mississippi valleys pushed heat advisories across Florida with heat indices reaching up to 115. Local authorities warned that vulnerable residents and those without air conditioning needed to stay hydrated and seek shade—risking heat-related illnesses.  The Gainesville Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health inspectors reported that 11 Gainesville restaurants received high-priority violations during inspections from July 14 to July 20 due to issues such as improper temperature control and inadequate sanitation—several eateries were required to take corrective actions immediately—and follow-up inspections are scheduled.  The Gainesville Sun

SPORTS NEWS

  • Leanne Wong, a former Gator and current student assistant coach for Florida gymnastics, competed in the U.S. Classic at NOW Arena in Illinois this past weekend. She performed on uneven bars—tying for 11th with a score of 13.20—and on balance beam—tying for fifth with a score of 13.30.  WCJB
  • Former Gator Jake Clemente signed with the Miami Marlins for a $500,000 contract a week after being drafted — a deal that exceeds the No. 198 pick slot value of $309,400. He became the second Gator to sign after Luke Heyman and posted a 3.46 ERA in 54.2 innings last season.  WCJB
  • Florida's football season is set to begin soon as media votes from SEC Media Days placed the team in sixth position + coach Billy Napier said this season will focus more on his strategies than on relying on any one player. The Gators are preparing for practice to meet high expectations for a competitive season.  WRUF
