COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Gainesville woman received a 'Habitat Home' built by students from Santa Fe College’s Charles R. Perry Construction Institute in partnership with Alachua Habitat for Humanity yesterday+ The home is part of an annual project designed to increase safe housing for local families.  WCJB

CRIME NEWS

  • Roman Duncan Dontae Mitchell, 34, was arrested for accessory to sexual battery after he allegedly set up a rape at The Lodge at Meridian in November 2024—text messages and surveillance video linked him, and bail has not been set.  Alachua Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Judge Walker upheld the $15 million jury award in favor of Sgt. Kevin Davis in a racial discrimination case against the sheriff's office—she denied motions for a new trial and reduced damages; the sheriff's office filed those motions in early May and its appeal is now on hold pending final orders.  Mainstreet Daily News
  • The City of Gainesville will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 457 SE 20th St. on July 18 from 9-11 a.m. — The event will mark the completion of a $3.8 million roadway and infrastructure system that supports economic growth in East Gainesville, with Mayor Harvey Ward and other officials set to speak.  Alachua Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • UF Innovate and SCAD Media have introduced an AI-supported platform called Moxie Hands-Free Nurse that will help nurses reduce their documentation from 30% to 10%, giving them more time to care for patients. Assistant professor Tamara Macieira said the tool was developed after she struggled with lengthy paperwork and aims to improve patient care.  WCJB
  • UF Health leaders celebrated the opening of a new Florida Recovery Center behind UF Health Springhill Medical Complex on Northwest 90th Boulevard on Tuesday. The 5-acre campus increased bed capacity from 80 to 124 and offers addiction evaluations, group and individual therapy, lectures, outpatient care, a swimming pool, gym, outdoor recreation area, and a pickleball court — it is Florida’s top-ranked addiction treatment center — to help patients rebuild their lives.  WCJB

  • Celeste Forte is a Florida lacrosse player who showed strong leadership by returning from a knee injury in her freshman year and helping the team reach the Final Four twice + win the Big XII championship. She now works as an account executive and supports her sister Mia as she plays lacrosse at Binghamton University.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Six Florida Gators were selected on day two of the 2025 MLB Draft on Monday — the picks, which included Colby Shelton, Jake Clemente, Pierce Coppola, Bobby Boser, Luke Heyman, and Brody Donay, tied the university with Louisville, UC Irvine, NC State, and Wake Forest for the 16th most selections this year.  WRUF
