- ➤ A 22-year-old man from Williston was indicted in federal court for armed drug-trafficking—he was arrested on July 10 on charges of possession with intent to distribute marijuana and gun possession, and his trial is scheduled for August 13. WCJB
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Most Florida schools will start the 2025-26 school year on Aug. 11 as state law sets Aug. 10 as the earliest allowed start date — fifty-six counties will begin then while others start between Aug. 12 and Aug. 14. A new law lets districts set their own schedules and bans cell phone use during lessons, and a month-long tax holiday from Aug. 1 to Aug. 31 allows tax-free school supply purchases. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Residents from the East Side Greenway, led by Paul Pritchard, have opposed a plan to build 149 single-family homes on an 82-acre site near Newnans Lake since late May when the county commission approved the development despite an earlier planning vote against it. The group will ask the commission to review proposals such as stormwater management and dark sky lighting at the rezoning hearing (Aug. 12) to protect local drainage and wildlife areas. - ➤ UF and its police union did not agree on officer salaries after an eight-hour meeting on July 7, with UF proposing an $11,000 raise and the union seeking a $15,000 increase— a follow-up meeting took place on July 14 as talks remained unresolved. The Independent Florida Alligator
- ➤ Gainesville resident Jo Beaty sent an open letter asking City Commissioners to remove the consent agenda item for a $589,518 purchase of 75 new Bigbelly bins from the July 17 meeting, saying the city must show detailed history and placement of previous units before spending nearly one million dollars in three years—her letter calls for a full presentation of data before any approval.
