- ➤ Alachua police arrested Richard Caban (49) after he shot another man during an argument over a basketball hoop he took. WCJB

- ➤ On July 3, about 15 language learners gathered at The Boxcar Wine & Beer Garden in Gainesville to practice languages and celebrate different cultures at the free Language Exchange Party Bonanza. Organizer León Icaza, who started the event in 2020, said it helped participants improve their language skills and form new friendships. The Independent Florida Alligator
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UF is planning a 10% tuition increase for non-resident students — a change that will add nearly $1,000 per semester — and international and out-of-state students have voiced concerns over fairness. - ➤ At the FAC Annual Meeting held on July 9, Commissioner Ken Cornell was re-appointed as chair of the Community and Urban Affairs Policy Committee for the 2025 to 2026 term. He will lead the committee as it prepares a legislative platform addressing issues including growth management, development, planning and zoning, and affordable housing (aiming for strong home-rule protections) (to keep counties heard in Tallahassee). - ➤ On July 8, the Alachua County Commission voted to end its agreement with Celebration Pointe over money and service issues—if these are not fixed by July 11 at 5 p.m., the county will take control of the Sports and Events Center on Oct. 1. - ➤ Moody's Ratings affirmed GRU’s Aa3 bond rating and stable outlook on July 3, crediting the GRU Authority’s 10-year debt-reduction plan that cut the General Fund Transfer from $15.3 million to $8.5 million—moves that helped lower its debt from $1.8 billion to $1.7 billion. GRU remains on track to reduce about $400 million in debt by 2035—steps that support its competitive rate structure. Alachua Chronicle

Kramer Male Athlete of the Year on Wednesday after setting a record with 713 points this season and earning his first All-American first-team honor.
