COMMUNITY NEWS

  • High Springs will host its free National Night Out event on August 5 at the Civic Center with a DJ, free food, giveaways, a bounce house, and a water slide. The High Springs Police Department & Safe Kids North Central Florida will offer free car seat checks from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to help families with child passenger safety.  Alachua Chronicle
  • A new parkrun event at West End Community Park will begin on July 12 at 7:30 a.m.—a free, volunteer-run 5K that welcomes runners and walkers of all ages—and it will join the Depot Park parkrun, which regularly draws about 100 participants.  The Gainesville Sun

CRIME NEWS

  • Brandon Thomas Quinn, 36, was arrested on July 8 after allegedly waiting outside Main Street Publix to attack, choke, and try to rob a man—judge William Davis set his bail at $40,000.  Alachua Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida has expanded the Safe Haven Law to allow fire stations to add baby boxes starting July 1 to give parents a secure and private way to surrender newborns. Some stations, including one in Chiefland, already have climate-controlled boxes that alert responders when activated.  WCJB

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Florida launched HealthScreen to offer free screenings for hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and stroke — a program filling a vital gap in North Central Florida. The program uses mobile health vehicles at community events to provide education and referrals and is funded by a $937,000 grant from the Florida Department of Health.  Alachua Chronicle

  • Over Fourth of July weekend, Florida State improved its recruiting trail when five-star cornerback Chauncey Kennon committed to the Seminoles—Florida added safety CJ Hester and other schools switched players. Experts said more shifts could happen as teams worked to land top recruits.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Men’s college basketball rankings have been updated after the transfer portal closed and the NBA draft finished, setting rosters for the 2025-26 season. The updated Top 25 now has the defending champions Florida Gators ranked eighth as teams from major conferences adjust their lineups — the changes indicate a competitive race for next season’s title.  GatorSports
  • Florida lacrosse named Jared Bernhardt as its new assistant coach on Tuesday, July 8. He brings strong experience in lacrosse and football and joins head coach Amanda O’Leary and assistant coach Haley Hicklen—boosting the team’s coaching staff.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Florida men’s tennis sophomore Adhitya Ganesan worked hard under coach Adam Steinberg to get stronger after an injury hurt him in his freshman year — he raised his ranking to No. 41 by winning key matches over top players.
