CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities arrested 65-year-old Kim Gregory Melton—described as homeless—yesterday for armed burglary in Gainesville after a resident with a gun confronted him when he allegedly tried to steal items from a home, and officers later found several crack pipes during a search.  Alachua Chronicle
  • Gainesville police arrested Hawthorne man William Blas Hernandez (27) on July 5 after a traffic stop on NE 14th Street, finding trafficking quantities of drugs and a loaded 9mm pistol that had been reported lost in Orlando.  Alachua Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alachua County clarified at a Newberry meeting that claims of Champions Park driving hotel stays are inaccurate since the park generated only 1.7% of hotel revenue from April 2024 to March. The county approved $2 million from a voter-approved surtax to fund repairs — though it has not verified the projected $100 million economic impact — as Communications Director Mark Sexton stressed the need for proper maintenance.  Alachua Chronicle
