COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ham radio operators from the Gainesville Amateur Radio Society held their Summer Field Day at Waldo City Square on June 28th and 29th, where they practiced emergency communications with backup power and portable antennas—demonstrating how these skills work when power and cell service fail—thereby highlighting the role of amateur radio during outages.  WCJB

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Alachua County Fire Rescue responded to a house fire near SW 107th Street in the Kanapaha Highlands subdivision Saturday evening and contained hazards from equipment failure — no injuries were reported.  WCJB

CRIME NEWS

  • Deputies responded to after-parties following the Hawthorne Homecoming that spread across two to three blocks and forced the evacuation of more than 1,000 people+ a SWAT team later dispersed the crowd+ three individuals were stabbed and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.  WCJB
  • Tamara Stoiber, 37, was arrested on June 28 for two counts of child neglect and two counts of false imprisonment after she left her five-year-old daughters sleeping in a shed with a brick blocking the door at a property in Waldo—law enforcement said the shed's conditions put the children at risk near a busy highway.  Alachua Chronicle
  • Kimon Marcus Miller, 35, was arrested early June 29 for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon when Gainesville police found a pistol next to his car on SE 2nd Avenue+ he later admitted handling the gun despite saying an unknown passenger had left it there.  Alachua Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Paris Richardson (a Gainesville native) was crowned Miss Florida on June 28 and won a $20,000 scholarship; she earned her master’s degree in health administration at UF and was a former cheerleader at the university. Noelle Schnacky (a teen from Clermont) was named Miss Florida’s Teen 2025 with a $5,000 scholarship and will compete at Miss America’s Teen in September.  The Gainesville Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • GRU CEO Ed Bielarski said that GRU electric bills dropped 11% when the GRU Authority began in October 2023, and the cost for all its services is now among Florida’s lowest. He noted that the utility has helped low-income customers with free energy surveys & retrofitted over 2,400 homes to cut electric use.  Alachua Chronicle
