  • Alachua Habitat for Humanity will hold two milestone events in July to celebrate the 15th Habitat home built in partnership with Santa Fe College and CPPI—featuring a Send-Off Celebration on July 15 at 8:30 a.m. and a Home on the Move event on July 16 with the home arriving at 14261 NW 135th Terrace by 10:30 a.m.—for Gainesville resident Shavonne Washington, a material specialist at Shands Hospital.  Alachua Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • Gainesville police arrested Isaac Elijah James, 29, yesterday after a 13-month-old girl was found wandering in the parking lot of Home2 Suites by Hilton (2115 SW 13th Street) with a tobacco wrap in her mouth; he reportedly left the hotel room following an argument with his girlfriend and was charged with child neglect without great bodily harm with bail set at $5,000.  Alachua Chronicle
  • Xaviyaun Jacquez Williams, 23, was found guilty on June 26th in Gainesville of first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and attempted felony murder after he shot Trevaughn Wilkerson during a narcotics dispute in Linton Oaks — he received consecutive sentences including life imprisonment.  Alachua Chronicle
  • On June 25, 2025, a bicyclist was killed on NE SR 26 east of Newnans Lake when a sedan from Gainesville hit him from behind (at about 9:37 p.m.) and he was pronounced dead at the scene (Florida Highway Patrol said his identity remains unknown).  Alachua Chronicle

  • Gainesville native Emmanuel Garilus won Amateur Night at the Apollo last night with a saxophone performance that joined him to legends like Ella Fitzgerald and James Brown. The win—achieved through the One Nation One Project GNV Talent Search—marks the first time a contestant swept all four rounds and will earn him $20,000, special edition Bulova watches, and a weeklong professional development experience in Los Angeles.  Alachua Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alachua County Public Schools will launch new district and school websites along with a new direct messaging system called Apptegy Alert on June 30 at 3:30 p.m.—the current website will be offline for about an hour during the transition—and later this summer the district will introduce a new app and teacher messaging platform called Rooms to improve communication with families and staff.  Alachua Chronicle

  • Incoming Gators golfer Trevor Gutschewski won the 107th Western Junior Championship at The Harvester Club on Thursday — marking his second straight win and adding his name to champions like Collin Morikawa, Rickie Fowler, and Jim Furyk — as he carries on a family tradition with his father on the PGA Tour and his brother on the Korn Ferry Tour.  WCJB
