ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • One person was killed in a deadly crash on U.S. Highway 301 near Southeast Hawthorne Road in Alachua County, and emergency crews plus the Florida Highway Patrol are investigating the scene — deputies asked drivers to steer clear of the blocked lanes.  WCJB

CRIME NEWS

  • Gainesville police arrested 84-year-old Robert Merril McBride yesterday for possessing and sharing child pornography and for failing to register an email address as a sexual offender—Microsoft’s CyberTip and a subpoena linking his NW 34th Street home to the images led to his arrest.  Alachua Chronicle
  • Officers arrested Damon Worth on charges of elder abuse and robbery after he forcibly removed a disabled 66-year-old man from a vehicle on Archer Road in May and took about $300 in cash—witnesses reported the victim crawled to a nearby tree until firefighters helped him reach the hospital—Worth now faces further court action for his past offenses.  WCJB

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors at UF Health Shands Hospital say a Gainesville baby born with a rare heart condition is showing signs of healing on its own after receiving support with a BiVAD (biventricular assist device), and recent tests show dramatic improvement in his heart function. His parents, who have been by his side for seven months and lean on their faith, said doctors will evaluate whether he can soon go home without needing a transplant.  WCJB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Many top high school football players announced their college plans in early June, and the Florida Gators secured 10 commitments including players like Justin Williams and Kaiden Hall. Recruiting experts said UCLA also recruited top offensive linemen such as Champ Smith—showing strong competition for the best local talent.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin said that starting July 1 UF will use up to $20.5 million from its budget to benefit all 21 sports by providing additional scholarships or direct payments following the House vs NCAA settlement—each program must also cut its budget by 5% to help cover costs.  GatorSports
