COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday, June 17, over 200 protesters gathered at Depot Park to defend immigrants’ rights in response to ICE raids in L.A.—the event was organized by the Gainesville Party for Socialism and Liberation and featured chants, handmade signs, and a march along Main Street while police managed traffic. Many participants carried flags and expressed their determination to support the community, and a few even joined from nearby areas after traveling long distances.  The Independent Florida Alligator

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An 8-year-old child died and two others were injured in a jet ski accident near the Putnam-Alachua County line — authorities are investigating the incident.  WCJB

CULTURE NEWS

  • UF's Latin American and Caribbean Collection is on the third floor of Smathers Library and was founded in 1925; it holds over 500,000 books, newspapers, microfilms and recordings in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and indigenous languages. The collection will feature a Caribbean Heritage Month display with bilingual recipe cards in June — a key resource for local researchers and students — and continues to preserve unique historical materials.  The Independent Florida Alligator

  • Florida Panthers fans celebrated Tuesday night's Stanley Cup Championship win at The Swamp Restaurant as over 100 fans gathered to watch the game—longtime supporter Walter Alaman, a dedicated fan for 20 years, cheered the win.  WUFT
  • Residents can vote for the top Boys Track and Field athlete in the Gainesville area from 9 first-team nominees + voting closes Sunday, June 22 at 11:59 p.m.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Trevor Gutschewski, a Gators Golf commit from Nebraska who graduated high school in May, competed in his first Major at the 125th U.S. Open at Oakmont this past weekend—he watched his father, Scott, compete at Bethpage in 2009. Gutschewski will join the Gators Golf team this fall.  WCJB
