  • First Magnitude Brewing Company is hosting its 4th annual pet contest today — local pet owners are competing in various categories with winners to be announced later.  WCJB

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 66-year-old Williston man died in Levy County when a sedan driven by a 26-year-old Bronson man crossed into the path of his motorcycle on US Highway 27-Alt Sunday night — emergency responders transported him to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville where he was pronounced dead.  Mainstreet Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Florida students are joining the Reconnect Movement by switching from smartphones to flip phones to build in-person connections, as nearly half of teens say social media negatively affects kids their age.  The Gainesville Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a Gainesville City Commission meeting on June 5, officials announced that the Gainesville Regional Transit System lost about $2.9 million in UF funding—nearly half of its annual revenue from UF. The cuts mean route realignments and reduced frequency starting June 30, which has left community members worried about getting to work or school on time.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Alachua city commissioners will meet to discuss an interim city manager role after Mike Deroza resigned on May 26 after serving for nine years — his departure has prompted plans to set a course for finding a permanent replacement. The meeting will help guide the next steps in the city’s leadership search.  WCJB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Buchholz junior wideout Justin Williams committed to the Gators for 2026 after an outstanding season in which he scored 29 touchdowns and gained over 2,400 yards (staying only four miles from home). The Gators also added three-star offensive tackle Chancellor Campbell from Lakewood High to bolster their roster.  WCJB
  • Coach Cornelius Ingram resigned as head girls’ basketball coach at Hawthorne after eight seasons where he led the Lady Hornets to three state championships and a record of 149 wins and 40 losses. Shereka Jackson is set to replace him with nine returning varsity players next season — Ingram will continue as head coach of the football team and said he might return to girls’ basketball later.  WRUF
