COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ UF undergraduates Ava Theng and Tara Fenelon launched Pathways to Wellness to help people experiencing homelessness in Gainesville and Pensacola connect with essential support such as hygiene kits, cancer screening information and bicycles using a $10,000 grant. They partnered with local organizations and UF departments—like UF Health Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach—to offer additional resources including a course on growing fruits and vegetables. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Gainesville police arrested Priscilla Aqucila Ealy, 32, on June 6 on a child neglect charge after a neighbor reported her disabled five-year-old was left alone and screaming for 45 minutes at an apartment off Tower Road, and deputies questioned her claim of leaving the child with a babysitter while she drove to Jacksonville—traffic cameras tracked her vehicle on Tower Road before she said she left. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Gainesville Empowerment Zone Family Learning Center (opened two years ago) celebrated the graduation of 13 preschool scholars (this year's class) as it marked a milestone in early education. WCJB
- ➤ UF alumnus Rithik Raja will release a new version of the Gathr app at the beginning of Fall to help students find clubs—he created the app after the original version lost users and designed it to be simpler. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gainesville’s RTS announced bus route changes that will begin on June 30 after UF reduced its transit funding, including merging some routes and canceling others.
