COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On June 5, 2025, the Community Foundation of North Central Florida and its third cohort of NextGen Changemakers awarded $25,000 in grants to local nonprofits—$15,000 to the CHILD Center at SWAG, $5,000 to GROW Hub, and $5,000 to Southern Scholarship Foundation—to support education, health, and livability. Eight young leaders graduated in May after a six-month program that began in 2022, expanding an alumni network of 24 emerging philanthropists.  Alachua Chronicle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dunkin’ is celebrating National Donut Day today by offering a free donut with any beverage purchase for the 15th year and launching a limited-edition collaboration with Stoney Clover Lane that features playful donut and coffee-themed merchandise. CRIME NEWS

  • Officers arrested 18-year-old Malachi Rosario on charges of attempted murder and shooting into a dwelling after he admitted firing multiple shots at the Grove apartments on Southeast 19th Place in Gainesville on March 16 that hit three apartments and two vehicles.  WCJB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On June 5, UF Board of Trustees Chair Mori Hosseini said he was deeply disappointed that the Board of Governors voted 10-6 to reject Dr. Santa Ono as UF’s next president — he noted Ono’s strong qualifications and the symbolic value of having the University of Michigan president choose UF, and the search for a new candidate will now restart.  The Gainesville Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gainesville city commissioners voted unanimously to move forward with plans for a special election to return GRU governance to the city after a judge ruled in April that the charter could be amended. A second reading is scheduled for June 12 and the election will be held on Nov 4 with an estimated cost of about $225,000+ depending on ballot design and early voting arrangements.  WCJB
  • Santa Fe College Police Chief Ed Book will retire this fall after more than 40 years in law enforcement (he spent over 26 years with the Gainesville Police Department and serves as a city commissioner), citing his wife’s retirement and work demands as reasons for stepping down.  The Gainesville Sun
  • The School Board of Alachua County will meet at 9 a.m. on Monday, June 9 to consider the charter contract and facilities management agreement for Newberry Community School in the District Office Board room (620 East University Avenue).  Alachua Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • UF/IFAS Extension and UF Health Cancer Center today launched a free online program for people with a new cancer diagnosis that offers 14 self-paced modules covering topics like financial planning and stress management — a resource built on expert, evidence-based information. The program will evolve as patients and caregivers provide feedback and suggest new topics to improve the guidance provided — ensuring it meets growing needs.  Alachua County Today
