  • On Memorial Day, May 26, 2025, about 700 people gathered in Newberry to dedicate a new Veterans Memorial that honors local service members. City Commissioner Mark Clark led the long-planned project using city funds, brick sales, and donations—featuring a life-sized bronze statue of a military working dog as a centerpiece.  Alachua County Today

  • Maria Alejandra Puentes, known as La Maracucha, opened a permanent restaurant on West University Avenue in Gainesville after starting her food truck in 2020; she serves traditional Venezuelan dishes + crepes and ice cream that give locals a taste of home. CRIME NEWS

  • Gainesville police are seeking a suspect who abandoned an 8-week-old poodle in a Publix parking lot in Hazel Heights just before 10 a.m. Tuesday—surveillance shows a gold Toyota Camry with damage on the driver’s side and rear and describes one suspect as a light-skin, younger Black male while the dog, found locked in a crate without food or water, suffers from an unknown toxin or virus.  WCJB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Thirteen high school students from Alachua County Public Schools were named National Merit Scholarship winners on June 4 by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, with winners from Gainesville High School, Eastside High School & Buchholz High School among those honored. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Florida Board of Governors rejected UF's selection of Dr. Santa Ono as president on June 3 after questioning him for three hours about DEI and related issues—marking the first time the board has denied a university's choice. UF trustees will restart the search while interim president Kent Fuchs holds office until a new appointment is confirmed.  The Gainesville Sun

  • Four-star safety Kaiden Hall committed to play for the Florida Gators after his official visit to The Swamp—he is now the highest rated recruit and the second Florida native to commit this week.  WRUF
  • Florida Gators head men's golf coach J.C. Deacon was named Division I Southeast Region Coach of the Year by the Golf Coaches Association of America on June 4. He has led the team to 2 SEC championships and a regional title this season — the first season with both wins since 2011 — while reaching the NCAA National Championship Semifinals.  WRUF
  • The Florida men’s basketball team will face UConn in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, Dec. 9 as a rematch of their 77—75 win in the NCAA tournament. The game will air at 9 p.m. on ESPN.  WCJB
